Need Help Improving the Efficiency of Your Furnace?
Regular Maintenance
The most important thing you can do to improve your heating system’s
energy efficiency is to have it cleaned and serviced regularly. Scheduling a
tune-up at least every two years not only enhances your furnace’s
performance, but also extends its lifespan. A qualified technician will be
able to spot potential problems during a routine tune-up and can take
corrective action before small issues turn into major headaches, helping to
prevent expensive malfunctions and reducing repair costs. Most manufacturers
also require proof of annual maintenance as part of their warranties. Morrow
Mechanical offers a maintenance agreement called the Home Comfort Club. Call

Seal Ducts
Heat loss is the number one reason why your home’s heating system may not
be working at peak performance. When warm inside air seeps out through
cracks or gaps in poorly sealed windows, doors and ductwork, the furnace is
forced to work harder to compensate; this means more energy is wasted and
your utility costs begin to climb. Do a thorough inspection of your home to
identify areas where you may be losing heat. It is a good idea to perform
this inspection before the cold weather sets in. Pay special attention to
windows, doors, floors, walls, ceilings, plumbing fixtures and electrical
outlets. Use caulk to plug up any gaps or cracks you find. Weather stripping
around windows and doors will make them more resistant to drafts. Duct
sealant or tape can stop up any small tears or gaps in your ductwork.
Clean Furnace Filters
Over time, furnace filters accumulate dust, pollen, lint, dirt and other
airborne debris that restrict the air flow into and out of the unit. They
need to be cleaned or replaced regularly to help keep your heating system
working as efficiently as possible. Inspect filters about once a month, and
clean or replace them every three months – of course, if you see anything
that is blocking the filter or if you live in an area that gets very cold
during the winter, you may need to replace your filter more often. Damaged
or worn filters should also be replaced.
Clean or Adjust Burners
Furnace burners can become incredibly dirty over time. This affects the
system’s heating capacity, and forces the furnace to use more gas. A
qualified service tech can clean or adjust the burners as needed, improving
the overall efficiency of your home’s heating system.
