AC Filter Replacement in Spring & the Greater Houston Area
Our clients sometimes ask, what is the most important thing they can do to make sure their system works well between their seasonal tune-ups? The answer is simply this; remember to change your systems return air filters. Changing air filters is critical to the proper performance of your HVAC system, not to mention your home's air quality. Changing the air filters is not all that hard for most homeowners, but there are a few challenges to actually completing the job.
How often should I change the filters
Knowing how often to change your air conditioning and heating systems filters and what kind of filters to replace them with is step one. We have a simple rule of thumb. If the filter is dirty, change it! Changing your filters on a regular basis not only keeps your home clean but it also reduces the stress that it puts on your air conditioning and heating system. Dirty or clogged filters not only make the system work harder resulting in an increase in your energy bill, they could even damage important parts of your cooling and heating system. Typically the 1” filters in the wall or ceiling need to be changed out every 30 to 60 days depending on the home and the type of filter. Many of our customers don’t realize that they have an additional filter in their attic called a media filter. Over 50% of the homes in Houston now have this type of filtration. If you have a media filter in your attic, these 4” to 5” filters need to be changed every 6 to 12 months depending on your home.
There are some differnces in types of filters
A media filter offers the most effective form of air filtration for your home due to a larger surface area than standard one-inch filters. High quality media filters are about eighty-five percent effective at capturing harmful microbes and large dust particles. A media filter can both protect your equipment and improve your indoor air quality without reducing your system’s performance. You can check for yourself if you are not sure your home has this type of filter, although it does require a trip to the attic. You can locate it by looking at the return side of your furnace for a box that will be labeled for the media filter. Changing this filter is not hard to do and replacement filters are available at Home Depot. We also provide this service for you when doing seasonal tune ups.
